Grade 1 DL Course Descriptions

DL Standard

• English Language Arts 1 (ELA1)
  Unit studies using Accelerated Christian Education materials (Word Building - 12 PACEs - 1001-1012, plus English - 12 PACEs - 1001-1012). The Word Building is completed with the ABC Kit and is a very successful learning-to-read phonics program. The course also includes other teaching strategies that enhance the program: skill wheels, flashcards, language games, letter writing, reading log, journaling (integrated with Social Studies 1 course) and poetry (integrated with Visual Arts 1 course).

• Math 1 (MA1)
  Unit studies using Accelerated Christian Education materials ( 12 PACEs - 1001-1012). The course concludes with a BC Math 1 workbook (15 pages) which ensures all Learning Outcomes are offered. The bulk of the program teaches the processes of addition and subtraction of one digit whole numbers (to 18). The PACEs also introduce time, measurement and Canadian money. The course also includes hands-on activities and corresponding BC Math worksheets to ensure that all the Learning Outcomes are offered. The hands on activities include math games, “real life” math activities and math Art and will explore the use of calculators, addition and subtraction, simple patterns, shapes, transformations, symmetry, simple data analysis and chance and uncertainty.

• Science 1 (Sci1)
  Unit studies using Accelerated Christian Education materials (12 PACEs - 1001-1012. PACEs 1010, 1011 & 1012 are optional). PACE work guides learners through the study of creation, plant and animal life, the seasons and God’s wisdom through creation. The course also includes hands-activities that correspond with the pace material and cover topics on magnets, force and friction and living and non-living things. The hands-on activities consist of experiments requiring the use of the scientific method and two lap book assignments.

• Social Studies 1 (SS1)
  Unit studies using Accelerated Christian Education materials (12 PACEs - 1001-1012 - PACEs 1006 & 1011 are optional). Topics include, obedience, stewardship, sharing, occupations, climate, and truthfulness. The course also includes extension activities that correspond with the pace material and cover topics on community, family and mapping. Journaling is encouraged throughout the course and quality library references are given to enhance the activities.

• Animal Science 1 (AnSci1)
  Unit studies using the Accelerated Christian Education materials (12 PACEs) designed to complement “ABC with Ace & Christi” kit.

• Bible Reading 1 (BR1)
  Unit studies using Accelerated Christian Education materials (12 PACEs - 1001-1012) designed to complement “ABC with Ace & Christi” kit.

• Physical Education 1 (PE1)
  Individual and partner game suggestions are provided.

• Visual Arts 1 (VA1)
  The course consists of 12 Art activities that integrate with the Science and Math paces. Examples of various art techniques are provided as well as a piece of poetry that relates to each sample of art. Various mediums and methods are encouraged.

• Health & Career Education 1 (HCE1)

Courses may be either self-designed or teacher developed. In self-designed courses parents collaborate with the teacher to select resources, refine individual goals, and select assessment strategies that meet the Provincial Learning Outcomes for Grade 1. Parents interested in teacher-developed courses may contact the individual teachers for information on courses currently available.
