Anchor Academy's DL students will earn their BC Dogwood Certificate under the BC Graduation Program 2004. Please refer to the Ministry of Education's Grad Planner (pdf) and Graduation Program website for high school graduation requirements.
Listed below are the courses that are offered frequently. Other courses that do not have many “takers” can be arranged for students who are interested in them. Students are encouraged to inquire about any other courses that would be of interest to them.

Required Courses
- English 10 (EN10)
This is our first of the preparatory courses for the English 12 provincial exam; it is also the final course to emphasize the structure of English grammar. Students will see the introduction of a short story/essay component and will be asked to write a number of varied compositions ranging from simple descriptive paragraphs to book reviews on the studied novels. Major written assignments in other courses will also determine the report card grades for English. Also, using the Saskatchewan Association of Independent Christian Schools (SAICS) materials (7 PACEs), two novels, and 1 cassette. (Score on Provincial Exam will be 20% of final grade.)
- Mathematics
Choose Principals of Math or Applications of Math or Essentials of Math
- Principles of Math 10 (MA10)
This course covers basic algebra, trigonometry and geometry. It is a prerequisite to Principles of Math 11, is based on 13 books, and has three term tests written throughout the course. A graphing calculator is preferable. Uses the Saskatchewan Association of Independent Christian Schools (SAICS) curriculum 10A-C, 10 E-I, 20A-C, A30E, C30C, and statistics project. (Score on Provincial Exam will be 20% of final grade.) Cost of calculator is not included in course cost. - Applications of Math 10 (AMA10)
This course is an alternative to Principles of Math 10. It is recognized by some college programs for entrance requirement. It covers algebra, geometry, relations, linear functions, sequences, consumer math, and irrational numbers. It includes 12 books, has a midterm and a provincial final exam. A scientific calculator is required. Using the Saskatchewan Association of Independent Christian Schools (SAICS) curriculum, 10A, 10D-G, 10 I, 20C, 20G, A30E, C30C, A30G, B30J. (Score on Provincial Exam will be 20% of final grade.) Cost of calculator is not included in course cost. - Essentials of Math 10 (EMA10)
This course is an alternative course for students who really struggle in math. It covers personal banking, wage spreadsheets, trigonometry, geometry, and probability. A student who decides to take this course path will graduate, but will not have the necessary requirements for university. A scientific calculator is required. Curriculum used is Accelerated Christian Education Business Math (PACEs 1114, 1115) , and Algebra (1088, if not already completed and, 1106, 1107) Professor Teaches Excel (spreadsheet), Saskatchewan Assoc. of Independent Christian Schools (SAICS) 10D, 10 I, and projects on geometry, probability and sampling. (Score on Provincial Exam will be 20% of final grade.) Cost of calculator is not included in course cost.
- Principles of Math 10 (MA10)
- Science 10 (SC10)
This course is an overview that includes the study of Earth Science, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. A course overview will be sent out at the beginning of the year, so the student will understand what is required. The course curriculum is Accelerated Christian Education materials (PACEs 1090,1091, 1107,1110, 1112,1113, 1118, 1119, 1120), plus written assignments. Student to choose labs on video or DVD. (Score on Provincial Exam will be 20% of final grade.)
- Social Studies 10 (SS10)
This course will focus on Canadian history to the year of 1913. Students will examine the factors that led to the union of the British colonies in North America as well as the westward expansion of the nation. Major topics will include the War of 1812, 1837 Rebellions and Durham’s Report, Confederation, the settlement of Manitoba, British Columbia, and the prairie provinces. Work consists of a number of major assignments given verbally by the teacher.
- Planning 10 (Plan10)
This course incorporates understanding the graduation program, education and career options, health issues, dealing with finances and workplace assignments (WCB). We use the Larry Burkett (Crown Ministries) workbooks: Career Direct Youth Exploration Survey, and God’s Way of Handling Money. Health PACEs (Accelerated Christian Education) 3, 4, 5.
- Physical Education 10 (PE10)
The student will have to complete 100 hours of physical activity which is recorded on a PE log. It is hoped students will participate in a wide variety of activities and learn the importance of fitness in their daily lives. They will also be required to complete 2 written assignments.

- Applied Skills
Four credits (equivalent to one full-year course) in Applied Skills or Fine Arts are required in Grade 10 or Grade 11 or Grade 12.
- Home Economics (HE10)
A general four credit course that encompasses foods, textiles and family studies. Alpha Omega Life Pacs are used to explore many areas of home and family care. - Home Economics: Foods 10 (HEF10)
A 2 credit course that just looks at the basics of cooking and baking. - Home Economics: Textiles 10 (HET10)
A 2 credit course that just looks at the basics of textiles and sewing. - Information Technology 10 (INT10)
Using curriculum from the “Professor Teaches” series, the student may choose to start with Windows 95, 98 or 2000, and then can choose from Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, Outlook and Front Page 2000, as well as Internet Explorer 5.0. All these are introductory and come with a workbook and CD, except Windows 2000 and Front Page 2000 (CD only). - Note: Only certain levels of Cadets, 4H, Red Cross, etc. (re: Youth development and Occupational courses) count for grade 11 credits (see Applied Skills 11 on page H-27 of the Anchor Handbook). Lower levels of completion in these organizations can count for credits in grade 10. Please contact the school for details.

Unit studies using Accelerated Christian Education materials (12 PACEs (1109-1120), 4 score keys (1109-1111, 1112-1114, 1115-1117, 1118-1120)). This comprehensive teacher-directed course is designed to give the student a book-by-book understanding of the history, setting and content of the Old Testament.

As a resource, we will use Rosetta Stone (Level I) - the on-line version; all reports illustrate this to be a very enjoyable and interesting medium. Students will concentrate on vocabulary that will be useful to them in everyday communication; themes range from food and clothing to family relationships and travelling. Grammatical topics include a discussion of nouns, verbs, prepositions, and other parts of speech.
- German 10 (GE10)

- Work Experience 10 (WEX10)
Career Prep is a program where students combine school studies with a work placement in the community. Students learn through participation in the tasks that are normally performed in the day-to-day operation of the work site. The student will spend a minimum amount of 100 hours at the work placement. A training plan is jointly developed by the supervisor of the work site, the program teacher and the student. The student will be responsible for maintaining a daily log.
DL Individualized
Parents collaborate with the teacher to select resources, refine individual goals, and select assessment strategies that meet the Provincial Learning Outcomes for Grade 10. Parents interested in Individualized courses may contact the teacher for information on courses currently available.
