Anchor Academy's DL students will earn their BC Dogwood Certificate under the BC Graduation Program 2004.  Please refer to the Ministry of Education's Grad Planner (pdf) and Graduation Program website for high school graduation requirements.

Listed below are the courses that are offered frequently.  Other courses that do not have many “takers” can be arranged for students who are interested in them.  Students are encouraged to inquire about any other courses that would be of interest to them.

Required Courses

  • English 11 (EN11)
    This course provides students with an opportunity to study the major genres of Literature: prose (fiction/non-fiction), poetry and drama. The emphasis will be on reading and interpreting such works. Moreover, students will also be asked to write on various topics presented throughout the year as well as show an understanding of English grammar. Unit studies using Saskatchewan Assoc. of Independent Christian Schools (SAICS) material, Canadian Literature, and one Shakespeare play.
  • Mathematics
    Choose Principals of Math or Applications of Math or Essentials of Math
    • Principles of Math 11 (MA11)
      This course is required for any student with a view of going to an academic college or university. It requires the student do 12 books and covers such topics as algebra, trigonometry, geometry and functions. There are three term tests and a final exam in this course. A graphing calculator is mandatory (a “TI 83 Plus" is recommended). Unit studies using Accelerated Christian Education materials (any ‘gap’ PACEs), plus Saskatchewan Assoc. of Independent Christian Schools (SAICS) material: 20D-F, 20 H - I, A30A-D, B30C-D, C30F (5 pages a day). Cost of calculator and gap PACEs is not included in course cost.
    • Applications of Math 11 (AMA11)
      This course is an alternative to Principles of Math 11. It covers problem solving, consumer math, algebra, graphing, geometry, and probability. The course will have three term exams and a final exam. The course is recognized by several colleges, but not all. Students interested in taking this course will have to make sure it is recognized by the program they are interested in and the college or university they are interested in attending. A graphing calculator is mandatory. Using Open Learning (modules 1, 2, 3 & 4). Cost of calculator is not included in course cost.
    • Essentials of Math 11 (EMA11)
      This course is an alternative for students who struggle with math. It covers the math of relations and formulas, income and debt, data analysis, measurement technology, owning a vehicle, personal income tax, probability, and also incorporates a business plan. This course provides a level 11 Math for graduation requirements, but is not recognized at college level. A scientific calculator is required. Unit studies using Accelerated Christian Education materials (Math PACE 1095 & 1085 if not already completed, Business Math PACE 111-113, 116-118), Saskatchewan Assoc. of Independent Christian Schools (SAICS) materials: 20I, 20J, 10E, 10F and an assigned income tax project. Cost of calculator and gap PACEs is not included in course cost.
  • Social Studies 11 (SS11)
    This course seeks to familiarize students with Canadian history of the twentieth century, explaining Canada’s role in world affairs as well as the ever-changing fabric of Canadian society. Students will be asked to submit a number of research assignments on well-defined topics. Textbook used “Canadian Issues: A Contemporary Perspective” plus teacher will give verbal assignments. (Score on Provincial Exam will be 20% of final grade.)
  • Science
    One Science course is required in Grade 11 or Grade 12.
    • Biology 11 (BI11)
      This is a comprehensive introductory course to the biological kingdoms from microscope viruses through to plants and animals. The course also explores ecology and the debate between evolution and creation. The course uses the text “Exploring Creation With Biology” by Dr. J. Wile, as well as additional assignments and slides (if microscopes available). Modules 1-4, 7, 10-14 with accompanying teacher directed assignments and tests. Students may use Dr. Wile textbook or Dr. Wile CD. (Optional slide kit available)
    • Chemistry 11 (CH11)
      This is a comprehensive introductory course to chemistry, seeking to familiarize the student with the basics of the discipline. Topics covered will include atomic structure, valence, types of chemical reactions, measurements and the mole concept, stoichiometry, atomic theory, solution and organic chemistry. The course is based on
      • Accelerated Christian Education materials (14 PACEs 1111, 1114, 1115, 1121, 1122, 1124-1127, 1130, 1131), Saskatchewan Assoc. Independent Christian Schools (SAICS) materials 30 A, B, & C, Text book: “ Chemistry For Christian School”, and will have a mid term and final exam.
        OR
      • Accelerated Christian Education materials (PACEs 1114, 1115, 1122, 1130, 1131) and “Exploring Creation with Chemistry” (Dr. J. Wile) modules 1-8, 10-11 and a mid term and final exam. Science labs on videos.
    • Earth Science 11 (ESC11)
      This is a comprehensive introduction to the sciences of geology, oceanography, atmospheric science and astronomy. Topics covered include rocks, minerals, weathering, glaciation, earthquakes, oceans, atmosphere, and space. The course is based on assignments and projects (using the world wide web), although one can also use a textbook “Earth Science” (Tarbuck and Lutgens). Teacher directed assignments and tests.
    • Physics 11 (PH11)
      This is a comprehensive introductory course to physics. Topics covered include vectors, Newton’s laws, momentum, Hooke’s law, heat, wave motion, optics, light and special relativity. The course is based on Accelerated Christian Education materials (11 PACEs - 1133-1137, 1117, 1138-1140, 1143, 1144 (omit part of) and teacher directed tests.

Electives

  • Fine Arts
    Four credits (equivalent to one full-year course) in Fine Arts or Applied Skills are required in Grade 10 or Grade 11 or Grade 12.
    • Media Arts 11 (VAMT11)
      Walk on the “art” side of photography. Using technology (camera and computer), the student will learn to develop 2 dimensional art pieces. They will also learn media principles of photography.
    • External credits can be earned through the following recognized institutions: Music courses (BC Conservatory of Music, London College of Music, Royal Conservatory of Music, Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, Victoria Conservatory of Music, and Trinity College). Dance courses (Association of International Dance Teachers, Canadian Dance Teachers Association, Chinese Dance Syllabus (Lorita Leung Dance Association), Royal Academy of Dancing, Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, British Association of Teachers of Dancing). Drama, speech and communication courses (London College of Music - Speech and Drama, Royal Conservatory of Music - Speech and Drama, Trinity College: London). The external courses are generally assigned a value of 2 credits each.
  • Applied Skills
    Four credits (equivalent to one full-year course) in Applied Skills or Fine Arts are required in Grade 10 or Grade 11 or Grade 12.
    • Family Studies 11 (FM11)
      This 2 or 4 credit course is based on projects and written assignments.
    • Food Studies 11 (FDS11)
      This 2 or 4 credit course is based on projects and written assignments. The student will have an opportunity to help create their program. Some Alpha Omega life pacs may be used.
    • Textile Studies 11 (TEX11)
      This 2 or 4 credit course is based on projects and written assignments. The student will have an opportunity to help create their program. Some Alpha Omega life pacs may be used.
    • External credits can be earned through the following recognized institutions. Please contact school for details. Youth Development courses: Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, External Cadets, Outward Bound, Grand Prior’s Badge, External 4-H, External Guides, External Scouts. Industrial and Occupational courses: Fitness Leader (BC Parks and Recreation), Ground Search and Rescue (Justice Institute of BC), Occupation Certification (Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council), External Lifesaving (Bronze Cross, National Lifeguard Service), Lifesaving Instructor, Canadian Red Cross Society (Water Safety Instructor, First Aid Instructor), Boating, External First Aid (Workers’ Compensation Occupational (WCB) First Aid Level II and III), Computer Certification (Microsoft, Cisco Career Certification, CompTIA (A+ and Nework+ and i-Net+), ICBC Approved Driver Education Course, Canadian Pilot’s License, Canadian Pony Club.
      Sport courses fall in the following categories - athlete, coach and official (specific programs include Junior A, Provincial Team, Team BC, National Team, BC and Sport Canada Athlete Assistance Program, Junior Lacrosse and Hockey Teams, 3M National Coaching Certification Program, BC School Sports, Coaches Association of BC, SportMedBC). External courses are generally assigned a value of 2 credits each.
  • Physical Education 11 (PE11)
    Each year the student will have to complete 100 hours of physical activity which is recorded on a PE log. It is hoped students will participate in a wide variety of activities and learn the importance of fitness in their daily lives. The Accelerated Christian Education material (3 PACEs (1, 2 & 6) in Health) and CPR video is used. Topics covered: general health/safety, physical fitness, nutrition, health hazards and life-threatening diseases, mental/emotional health, first aid and emergency health care.
  • Bible - New Testament Church History (YNTCH11)
    Unit studies using the Accelerated Christian Education materials (12 PACEs (1121-1132), 1 score key). A teacher driven study emphasizing the beginning of church history. A good approach for gaining an understanding of the history of the Gospel (the OT prophecies, Jewish rejection of the Messiah, apostolic fathers, the completion of the canon, the fall of Jerusalem, time of persecution, the strengths/problems of the early church, study of the church from 5th to 14th century, Gregory the Great, the schism of 1054 and the doctrines of the Roman Church. A study of reformation/post-reformation age, Pietism, Methodist missionary movement, and the church today).
  • Biblical Worldview Thinking I & II (YBWT)
    This course explores the 12 areas of study and how the Bible speaks into each area. It will challenge the student to think critically about what he or she believes and about what the Bible has to say on critical everyday issues.
  • French 11 ( Fr11)
    “Intermediate French” or even “Level Two” is perhaps a better title to this course. Its prerequisite is French 10 or “Introductory French” (“Level One”). Once again, we will utilize Rosetta Stone - Level II of the on-line version. Reliance on the communicative approach to language learning implies that here, too, practical topics of conversation will be chosen. These include, among others, shopping, health issues, and public services. Topics in grammar include modal auxiliaries, subordinate clauses, and passives.
  • German 11 (Ger11)
    “Intermediate German” or even “Level Two” is perhaps a better title to this course. Its prerequisite is German 10 or “Introductory German” (“Level One”). Once again, we will utilize Rosetta Stone - Level II of the on-line version.   • Work Experience 11A (WEX11A)
  • Work Experience 11B (WEX11B)
    Career Prep is a program where students combine school studies with a work placement in the community. Students learn through participation in the tasks that are normally performed in the day-to-day operation of the work site. The student will spend a minimum amount of 100 hours at the work placement. A training plan is jointly developed by the supervisor of the work site, the program teacher and the student. The student will be responsible for maintaining a daily log.
  • Secondary School Apprenticeship 11A (SSA11A)
  • Secondary School Apprenticeship 11B (SSA11B)
    SSA is a career program that gives students an opportunity to begin an apprenticeship while still in high school, and to earn high school credits for doing so. A SSA involves part time work within a trade - something many secondary students are doing anyway.

Parents collaborate with the teacher to select resources, refine individual goals, and select assessment strategies that meet the Provincial Learning Outcomes for Grade 11. Parents interested in Individualized courses may contact the teacher for information on courses currently available.
