Anchor Academy's DL students will earn their BC Dogwood Certificate under the BC Graduation Program 2004. Please refer to the Ministry of Education's Grad Planner (pdf) and Graduation Program website for high school graduation requirements.
Listed below are the courses that are offered frequently. Other courses that do not have many “takers” can be arranged for students who are interested in them. Students are encouraged to inquire about any other courses that would be of interest to them.

Required Courses
- English
One Language Arts course is required. Choose English 12 or English Literature 12.
- English 12 (EN12)
This course is designed to give students the opportunity to read, comprehend, examine and interpret works of English literature. Genres covered will be prose (fiction/non-fiction), poetry and drama. Major emphasis will be placed on the composition of essays and paragraphs and on the general improvement of writing skills. (Score on Provincial Exam will be 40% of final grade). - English Literature 12 (EnLit12)
This is a survey course of British literature from its beginnings right up to the late twentieth century. This is an excellent course for students who have a genuine interest in literature and will emphasize poetry and drama. (Provincial Exam is optional. If written, the score will be 40% of final grade; also provides opportunity to win Provincial scholarship).

A new requirement incorporating some aspects of the former Graduation Portfolio. More information is available at the Ministry of Education website.
Electives
- Principles of Math 12 (MA12)
This course is only recommended to students who either really enjoy math or are planning on taking a university science program. This course covers geometry, trigonometry, algebra, probability, logarithm, sequence and series, and circular functions and transformations. A graphing calculator is mandatory (“TI 83 Plus” is recommended). Open Learning modules 1 - 4 are used. Cost of calculator is not included in course cost. (Provincial Exam is optional. If written, exam score will be 40% of final mark; exam provides opportunity to win Provincial scholarship)
- Essentials of Math 12 (EMA12)
This course does not have a government exam. It covers income taxes, budgets personal finance and government finances. There are projects and tests involved and the Essentials of math 12 textbook is used.
- Comparative Civilization 12 (CCN12)
Students will research eight civilizations of the past and compare them along predetermined lines. This is an excellent course for students who like to work independently and who like to deal with cultures of by-gone eras. (counts as an examined course although there is no provincial exam)
- Geography 12 (GEO12)
This is an introductory course to the essentials of Geography. Topics covered include atmosphere, weather and climate, the lithosphere and its composition, environment and ecosystems, resources and resource management present and future. A number of different resources will be made available for this course. (Provincial Exam is optional. If written, exam score will be 40% of final mark; exam provides opportunity to win Provincial scholarship).
- Economics 12 (EC12)
This is an excellent course for students who desire an introduction to Economics. They will be introduced to the various economic systems, production and consumption of goods, the involvement of governments, international trade, commerce and other topics.
- History 12 (HI12)
Students will be guided through world history of the twentieth century, focusing on major events such as the World Wars, the Cold War, Middle East, Glasnost, and others. A number of different resources will be made available for this course (2 textbooks used “The World This Century” and “Global Forces”). (Provincial Exam is optional. If written, exam score will be 40% of final mark; exam provides opportunity to win Provincial scholarship)
- Biology 12 (BI12)
This course is an in-depth study of the human body, its systems, and the cell (and how they operate). The course is based on Open Learning modules 1-3. Course cost: $150.00 (plus deposits).(Provincial Exam is optional. If written, exam score will be 40% of final mark; exam provides opportunity to win Provincial scholarship)
- Chemistry 12 (CH12)
This is an advanced course in chemistry. It covers equilibrium chemistry, redox reactions, solubility, acids and bases, and reaction kinetics. Students will take this course if they have a great interest in chemistry, or if they are planning to enter any scientific field at university. Open Learning modules used. (Provincial Exam is optional. If written, exam score will be 40% of final mark; exam provides opportunity to win Provincial scholarship)
- Physics 12 (PH12)
This is an advanced course in physics and will be taken by students with a genuine interest in physics or students interested in entering a field of science at a university level. It covers electromagnetism, electric circuits, electrostatics, gravitation, circular motion, equilibrium, momentum, vectors in dynamics and kinematics. It is recommended that Principles of Math 12 be taken concurrently. Open Learning modules used. (Provincial Exam is optional. If written, exam score will be 40% of final mark; exam provides opportunity to win Provincial scholarship)
- Fine Arts
Four credits (equivalent to one full-year course) in Fine Arts or Applied skills are required in Grade 10 or Grade 11 or Grade 12.
- Fine Arts 12 (FNA12) Dance, music, or Art lessons.
- Media Arts 12 (MedA12)
Walk on the “art” side of photography. Using technology (camera and computer), the student will learn to develop 2 dimensional art pieces. The student will also learn media principles of photography. - Music (Mu12)
Units using Accelerated Christian Education materials (6 PACEs (1-6), 2 cassettes, 2 score keys (1-3, 4-6)). This course is designed to teach high school students or adult choir members to recognize various kinds of instruments (string, woodwind, brass, percussion, and keyboard instruments), properties of tone (sounds, pitch, duration, intensity, and quality), hymnology and music notation (worship songs, hymn stories, staffs, clefs, intervals, scales, triads, tetrachords, major scales), minor keys (rhythm, intro. to song leading), intro. to the singing voice/musical styles, music appreciation (baroque, classical, romantic, modern), read music, find keys/notes on a keyboard, and recognize notes, key signatures, and time signatures. - External credits can be earned through the following recognized institutions: Music courses (BC Conservatory of Music, London College of Music, Royal Conservatory of Music, Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, Victoria Conservatory of Music, and Trinity College). Dance courses (Association of International Dance Teachers, Canadian Dance Teachers Association, Chinese Dance Syllubus (Lorita Leung Dance Association), Royal Academy of Dancing, Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, British Association of Teachers of Dancing). Drama, speech and communication courses (London College of Music - Speech and Drama, Royal Conservatory of Music - Speech and Drama, Trinity College: London). The “external” courses are generally assigned a value of 2 credits each.
- Applied Skills
Four credits (equivalent to one full-year course) Applied Skills or Fine Arts are required in Grade 10 or Grade 11 or Grade 12.
- Accounting 12 (AC12)
This course seeks to familiarize the students with accounting concepts. Students will learn how to deal with financial data; they will become proficient in presenting data in balance sheets, and they will learn how to analyze that data to understand the financial status of an enterprise. The course is based on 12 PACEs (Accelerated Christian Education). - Food Studies 12 (FDS)
The student will create their own specific course when they discuss this elective with the teacher. Along with written assignments, the student will finish a number of projects that will show they have mastered new skills. Some Alpha Omega life pacs may be used. 2 or 4 credits. - Textile Studies 12 (TEX12)
The student will create their own specific course when they discuss this elective with the teacher. Along with written assignments, the student will finish a number of projects that will show they have mastered new skills. Some Alpha Omega life pacs may be used. 2 or 4 credits. - Information Technology 12 (INT12)
There are several computer courses available from the Professor Teaches series. A student will usually start with Windows 95, 98, or 2000, and then can choose from Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, Outlook and Front Page 2000, as well as Internet Explorer 5.0. All these are introductory and come with a workbook and a CD, except Windows 2000 and Front Page 2000, which only have a CD. - External credits can be earned through the following recognized institutions. Please contact school for details. Youth Development courses: Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, External Cadets, Outward Bound, Grand Prior’s Badge, External 4-H, External Guides, External Scouts. Industrial and Occupational courses: Fitness Leader (BC Parks and Recreation), Ground Search and Rescue (Justice Institute of BC), Occupation Certification (Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council), External Lifesaving (Bronze Cross, National Lifeguard Service), Lifesaving Instructor, Canadian Red Cross Society (Water Safety Instructor, First Aid Instructor), Boating, External First Aid (Workers’ Compensation Occupational (WCB) First Aid Level II and III), Computer Certification (Microsoft, Cisco Career Certification, CompTIA (A+ and Nework+ and i-Net+), ICBC Approved Driver Education Course, Canadian Pilot’s License, Canadian Pony Club. Sport courses fall in the following categories - athlete, coach and official (specific programs include Junior A, Provincial Team, Team BC, National Team, BC and Sport Canada Athlete Assistance Program, Junior Lacrosse and Hockey Teams, 3M National Coaching Certification Program, BC School Sports, Coaches Association of BC, SportMedBC). External courses are generally assigned a value of 2 credits each.

Each year the student will have to complete 100 hours of physical activity which is recorded on a PE log. In grade 12, the student will participate in some community service by coaching or helping. It is hoped students will participate in a wide variety of activities and learn the importance of fitness in their daily lives.
- Bible - Life of Christ (YLOC12)
Unit studies using Accelerated Christian Education materials (12 PACEs (1133-1144)). A teacher driven course designed to open to the student the life of the Saviour: the background of the Gospels, the world as it was in Christ’s day, the Jews and their habits and characteristics, and all the aspects of Christ’s life, ministry, death, and resurrection. Written on the senior high school level, it will greatly increase the student’s understanding of the Gospels.

- Secondary School Apprenticeship 12A (SSA12A)
- Secondary School Apprenticeship 12B (SSA12B)
SSA is a career program that gives students an opportunity to begin an apprenticeship while still in high school, and to earn high school credits for doing so. A SSA involves part time work within a trade-something many secondary students are doing anyway.
- Work Experience 12A (WEX12A)
- Work Experience 12B (WEX12B)
Work experience, including volunteer service, supports students in both their career development and their human and social development. This type of experiential learning increases the relevance of school by helping students connect what they learn in the classroom with the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to be successful in both the workplace and community. Students must complete the Work Safe Planning 10 Program before commencing on an Anchor Academy sponsored Work Experience Program.
DL Individualized
Parents collaborate with the teacher to select resources, refine individual goals, and select assessment strategies that meet the Provincial Learning Outcomes for Grade 11. Parents interested in Individualized courses may contact the teacher for information on courses currently available.
