Grade 5 DL Course Descriptions

 DL Standard

  • English Language Arts 5  (ELA5)
Unit studies using Accelerated Christian Education materials:  English (12  PACEs ), Canadian Literature (an indepth study using 2 Canadian novels with regular conference calls), and Word Building unit studies (12 PACEs).  Teacher will also give assignments.
  • Mathematics 5  (MA5)
God is the Master Mathematician and as such, He has created us with the capacity to quantify and qualify.  Numbers let us say how much we know, while their endlessness shows how little we know.  Basic number facts point to God’s steadfast character, while exponential notation points to His infinitude.  The best way to understand math is to do math.  The fundamental premise of Saxon Math series, or the Accelerated Christian Education  curriculum is that learners will best be served by increments instead of units, and continuous review throughout the year.
  • Science 5  (SC5)
You will learn the basic structure and function of the human respiratory, digestive, circulatory, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems and how they are interconnected. You will study simple machines, including lever, wedge, pulley, ramp, screw, and wheel, design a compound machine, and describe applications of machines used in daily life in BC communities. You will analyze how BC’s living and non-living resources are used, learn methods of extracting and processing them, describe the potential environmental impact of their use, and analyze the Aboriginal concept of interconnectedness. You will also study the steps in designing an experiment and the variables that can be changed.
  • Social Studies 5  (SS5)
Key events and factors in the development of Canada will be discussed. This includes fur trade, railroad, Confederation, citizenship and rights. Canada’s transportation systems, its resources and economic developments along with levels and responsibilities of government will be taught. The physical regions of Canada, its environment and natural resources will also be discussed.
  • Keyboarding 5  (COMP5)
Teacher will discuss computer program needs on an individual basis. Suggested program “Mavis Beacon Teaches Keyboarding”. Goal to reach 25 wpm by end of grade 7 (includes minimum per day practice).
  • Fine Arts 5  (FNA5)
Art projects may be assigned; contact teacher for course content.
  • Physical Education 5  (PE5)
Record activities and hours on P.E. time sheet. 85 hours per year plus 2 written assignments.
  • Second Language 5  (SL5)
Communication is the most exciting tool we have to interact with others.  God has given us the ability to learn other languages giving us a picture of the world and the inhabitants around us.  Learning a second language builds on written, oral and comprehension skills as well as emphasizing group communication.  Students will learn not only how to put sentences and thoughts together, but will discover a new cultural way of thinking through this course.  Rosetta Stone course materials will be used.
  • Health & Career Education 5  (HCE5)
