Grade 6 DL Course Descriptions
DL Standard
- English Language Arts 6 (ELA6)
Students develop and expand their God-given communications skills using Accelerated Christian Education materials for Word Building (12 PACEs) and Grammar Study (12 English PACEs). Literature and Creative Writing units include the integration of 4 PACEs and two accompanying novels with creative communication assignments in Terms 1 and 2; Joyce Barkerhouse's novel, Pit Pony, is studied in Term 3. The year ends with an independent novel study.
- Mathematics 6 (MA6)
Students use Accelerated Christian Education material (12 PACEs) and a variety of supplementary assignments taken from BC Math Workbook 6. The use of manipulatives is encouraged. The 3-week "Race for Gold" program will be optional for students who want to gain fluency with their multiplication facts.
- Science 6 (SC6)
The three main topics for the year are: Diversity of Life, Electricity, and Extreme Environments. Unit studies on Diversity of Life will have students identify characteristics of God's amazing creatures in each of the five kingdom classifications, as well as narrow the scope and consider the unique ways creatures fit into their environments. A microscope is optional; a quality magnifying glass is necessary. Electricity is primarily four sets of hands-on unit studies on static and current electricity, energy transformation from electricity, as well as electricity power sources. A supply list is available. The final unit, Extreme Environments, is project-based, researching challenges, technology, and Canadian contributions related to a selected environment. All unit studies are presented within a Christian framework. Students use various sections from the Probe 6 textbook.
For students using Accelerated Christian Education material, supplementary assignments re: experiments, hands-on electricity activities, and extreme environment study will be arranged.
- Social Studies 6 (SS6)
The theme for this course is "Canada and the World". The unit studies will take students around the world, studying various cultures regarding society, governance, economy, technology, and trade. These aspects of culture will be compared with Canadian culture and with the students' own experiences. A biblical perspective permeates the unit studies, integrating a number of stories and resource ideas from the World Vision website, along with selections from Global Citizens textbook.
- Fine Arts 6 (FNA6)
Students are to be engaged in a minimum of one Fine Arts activity throughout the school year, developing one or more aspects of their creative abilities. These can be any of the following: Visual Arts, Music, Drama, Dance. The teacher will ask for contact information re: the instructor(s) for evaluation purposes.
Art projects may be suggested or assigned for those students following a self-directed art course.
- Physical Education 6 (PE6)
Students are to maintain their health through regular exercise, good nutrition, and an awareness of safety concerns. Godly attitudes are to be developed while participating in sports, learning to play fairly and preferring others. At the beginning of the school year, students will prepare a personal fitness plan; this plan will be self-evaluated in the last term. Students are encouraged to include activities from a variety of movement categories.
- Second Language 6 (SL6)
One motivating factor for learning a second language is the ability to interact with others on a short-term missions trip, an activity encouraged and promoted by Anchor Academy. Rosetta Stone online course or CD will be used. Students will not only expand their vocabulary base and construct basic sentences, they will also discover a new cultural way of thinking through this course.
- Health & Career Education 6 (HCE65)
Students are to develop godly character, positive relationships, and healthy lifestyles. In the process, they are to understand their own special abilities and learn to plan for their future. Assignments related to goal setting and decision-making, career development, and healthy living will be given. An important aspect of this course is student participation in scripture memory and Bible devotional studies. Students are also encouraged to develop keyboarding skills, the Mavis Beacon Teaches Keyboarding program being one of the options.
DL Individualized
Courses may be either self-designed or teacher developed. In self-designed courses parents collaborate with the teacher to select resources, refine individual goals, and select assessment strategies that meet the Provincial Learning Outcomes for Grade 6. Parents interested in teacher-developed courses may contact the individual teachers for information on courses currently available.
