Required Courses
- Social Studies 9 (SS9) - 1st semester
This course takes the student to the roots of our Canadian heritage: our native peoples, the early exploration of North America, trade, French and English settlement, and colonial conflict/conquest (up to the War of 1812). We also study current events and issues, and investigate the relationship between Christianity and culture. The course is comprised of 40 e-mailed assignments -- most of them based on the textbook, Community Canada (Oxford). Students will need occasional access to a printer.
- Mathematics 9 (MA9) - 1st semester
Students who are ready for gr.9 Math may jump right into a series of ACE Math Paces. Those who need to prepare for algebra and trigonometry by learning or reviewing key concepts will be given “gap” Paces to complete first. (New students write a Math Diagnostic test.) The gr. 9 course content includes: polynomials (multiply/divide), solving equations, word problems, factoring (quadratic equation), fractional expressions, graphing systems of equations, inequalities, exponents and radicals, word problems, ratios and formulas, angles and trigonometry. Scientific calculators are required.
- English Language Arts 9 (ELA9) - 2nd semester
In this course, blocks of literature studies (electronic assignments) are alternated with blocks of grammar/language studies (ACE Paces, matched to the student’s level of proficiency). Reading material includes Up From Slavery and The Hiding Place, as well as a collection of poetry, short stories, and media communications. Students are given opportunities to share their ideas and their writing with classmates.
